Nokian has released their latest ultra-high-performance all-season tyre, the Surpass AS01, now shipping to North American dealers. The new model introduces several technical advances, including Aramid fiber reinforced sidewalls and the company's most silica-rich compound in their all-season range.

The tyre's construction prioritizes both performance and durability. At its core, the Surpass AS01 uses a high-silica compound designed to enhance handling characteristics and extend tyre life. The tread pattern combines a strong outer shoulder with a dedicated outer-middle rib for cornering grip, while the central rib incorporates 3D siping technology for direct handling response and grip.

Performance

Wet weather performance comes from a combination of wide circumferential grooves for water dispersal, paired with shoulder claws and dense 3D siping patterns across the tread face. These features work together to maintain grip in varying weather conditions, marking the tyre as a true all-season performer.

The Surpass AS01 introduces Nokian's first UHP-specific Pothole Protection warranty, covering damage from road hazards that render the tyre unrepairable. This program backs up the physical protection offered by the Aramid Strong Sidewalls, which use lightweight but tough aramid fibers to resist punctures.

For tyre longevity, Nokian has implemented a closed shoulder design reinforced with inner supports. This construction helps the AS01 achieve its 55,000-mile warranty rating. The tyre includes Nokian's Driving Safety Indicator system, which shows the remaining tread percentage directly on the tyre surface, removing the need for manual depth checks.

The range spans 65 sizes from 16 to 21 inches, with specific sizing for electric vehicles. Nokian has optimized the tyre's rolling resistance for both EV and traditional vehicle applications, marking compatible sizes with their Electric Fit emblem.

Steve Bourassa, Nokian's North America Director of Products, notes that the AS01 aims to merge the traditional UHP focus on grip and handling with enhanced durability features. The tyre started reaching North American dealers in early January 2025, adding to Nokian's growing performance tyre lineup.

Sustainability

Nokian has built sustainability into the AS01's design through its low rolling resistance compound, which helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions. This focus on efficiency, combined with the tyre's durability features and EV compatibility, positions the Surpass AS01 as a forward-looking entry in the UHP all-season market.

The Surpass AS01's mix of performance features, durability technologies, and broad size range suggests Nokian is targeting both traditional performance car owners and the growing performance EV segment. The addition of the Pothole Protection program indicates confidence in the tyre's robust construction while addressing common concerns about tyre damage in performance applications.
