Passenger Car Winter Ultra High Performance Tyres Tyre Review Highlights
Very good tires for winter. Used in upstate New York from November to April. Great grip even in -15 F. Started to get a little vague when it was dry around 65F.

Continental WinterContact TS870P – 215/40 R18 | Hyundai i20N
These are the first winter tires on my Hyundai i20N, so I have no direct back-to-back comparison on this car. They came with the car from the previous owner, with an estimated 2,000–4,000 miles already on them (+my 7500 miles), and they currently have around 5+mm of tread remaining. The majority of my use is highway commuting (80%+ of total distance), with occasional backroads and corners mixed in.
This is where the TS870P genuinely impresses. Both in dry and wet conditions, grip levels feel confidence-inspiring. I consistently feel like there's a little more in reserve before reaching the limit. Wet cornering in particular was a highlight; turn-in feels planted and the front end grips well. There is an occasional hint of understeer at the initial turn-in moment, which is worth noting for sporty driving, though it never felt unsettling, likely a combination of the tire's characteristic and the FWD layout of the i20N.
Only experienced light snow, so take this with a grain of salt. Braking confidence felt lower than what I remembered from the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 on my previous BMW F31 xDrive but that's AWD vs. FWD, so the comparison isn't exactly fair. I may also have simply been more cautious. No ice experience to report.
Road noise is noticeable, but the i20N is a stiff, sporty car it's not a quiet cruiser to begin with. Within that context, highway comfort was perfectly fine and I have no real complaints.
The 215/40 R18 size limits your options, and the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 in this size costs significantly more. Whether I repurchase depends on how the wear looks after next winter. Using Tyre Reviews as a guide, if anything ranked above the Continental can be found at a better price in this size, that'll be worth exploring.
So far, a solid, well-priced winter tire for daily and highway use. Wet grip is the highlight.

I have been using 870P for 2 years and I can honestly say this tyre is excellent. The best winter tyre I ever had.
Dry handling/traction excellent.
Wear is OK,
Wet handling - all good
Ice/snow- I would say the weakest part of tyre.
Comfort fantastic - definetely quiter than summer Bridgestone Turanza t005…
Consumption - not so big diference to summer tyre.

I have them on Opel Insignia- recommend to all!

I came from the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 to the TS870P. The Contis got more grip in the wet while cornering. On snow they are very predictable and kept my Octavia (4x4) nice balancend and avoid understeer. So good in the dry, perfect in the wet an perfect in snow. Does not feel so sporty in Terms of Initial steering and stiffnes but the grip level ist amazing.

Continental WinterContact TS 860 S
— rated 63%
while driving a Suzuki Swift Sport 1.4 ZC33S for 3000 miles
Fitted on my car and driven for some 3 months, since I previously had WinterContact TS 860 (without S suffix) on my previous car.
Not sure what changed between S and non S version of this tire, but it lost a bit of ability in the snow and gained handling capabilities in the snow and ice.
Braking is still strong, but bellow Michelin Alpine5.

Very good impression compared to Bridgestone LM005 that I had before

Bought it in December 2023 and for last 3 winters they are on my car. They have 40% on highway and 60% city drive. Comparing with regular wintercontact there is no standard noise when is temperature higher then 7 degC. On highway they feel really confident and handling on snow and icy road is really sporty. I will buy them again. I think one more seasson they will be ok to use.

Tyres are mounted on the new Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV. As for the feedback, is hard to tell because Santa Fe is just too big and too heavy to experience any feedback driving iat normal speeds.
In every other aspect the tyres exceeded all my expectations. Especially because I've got them for only 180 Chf for a tyre

Hankook Winter i cept evo3
— rated 89%
while driving a Volkswagen Arteon 2.0 TDI 200hp 4motion for 12000 miles
This tyers on snow are the safest of them all, I felt confident on a highway in a snow storm. I was on the mountin where all others were with snowchains and I didnt have them and drove safely uphill or downhill. On the positive side is that this tyers are confortable and silent even at high speed on higway.

Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3
— rated 40%
while driving a Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance Mk. 7.5 for 19500 miles
OEM winter tyre on a 2019 Golf GTI Performance. In my country, Andorra, a snowy country, I didn't like the grip on snow, especially after half its life, which was awful. In wet and even in dry conditions, there have been many losses of traction in this car. In my opinion, I wouldn't recommend it or buy it again. My next winter tires will be Goodyear Ultragrip Performance 3, which I expect will be much better.

Continental WinterContact 8 S
— rated 73%
while driving a Cupra Formentor 4Drive 333hp for 4400 miles
Did around 7k km on my Cupra Formentor 4WD 333hp with these tyres in Lithuania (eastern Europe). Dry and wet grip is superb, didn't have a single scenario where these tyres would underperform. However expected much more in terms of snow/ice grip. On snow I have to be careful, don't have good grip (even on light snow). Plenty of times rear of the car slid out a bit even in normal-ish driving, not to mention a bit more spirited drive. On ice grip is terrible, or rather way worse than I expected from 1k € tyres. Obviously these are performance oriented, so perhaps my mistake buying them. Still though, from Continental winter tyres I expected better grip in difficult conditions. Really can't say that I have confidence in these. Again - dry and wet asphalt grip is great. If you don't have snow/ice - these tyres will be a great choice. Otherwise I would suggest to look into something less performance oriented, if you value your safety that is
