Avon ZZ5 Reviews - Page 6

Given 90% while driving a BMW M3 (225/45 R18) on a combination of roads for 12,000 spirited miles
Had Michelin Pilots on before and way too expensive for what they were, the rear ones wore out really quickly. Finally replaced the rears with Avon ZZ3 which are very good indeed. Just replaced the fronts with ZZ5 as ZZ3 not available anymore. They appear to be very good indeed and well suited to BMW. Would definately reccomend.

Given 98% while driving a MG ZT 135 CDTi (225/45 R18) on mostly town for 200 average miles
Brought Mg ZT cheap.Could not keep it in straight line .Steering pulling all over place on back roads.
Had steering alignment checked - dead straight .
Had track rod ends steering joints checked - not a problem.
Changed cheap tyres which had 5mm tread left.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE AVON ZZ5 have made.
I cannot tell you how happy i am .
Thought I would have to spend loads on parts to make this car safe.

Given 87% while driving a Toyota Celica VVTLi (205/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 8 spirited miles
How you rate a tyre (or anything else for that matter) will always be influenced by what you have used before. I found the Pirelli Zero Asymmetrics that came with this car very good all round, but when the time came to replace them I was told that they were no longer available and was recommended Pirelli Zero Neros instead. As others have found, these had good dry grip but in the wet inspired no confidence at all. To make matters worse, tram lining was a constant issue. The Neros had to go and were later replaced by Goodyear Eagle F1s on the front driven wheels. Grip was good, but the tyres felt spongy and the steering a little bit numb compared to previously.

After pouring through the reviews here I eventually decided to try Avon ZZ5s on all four wheels. The car was transformed. The tyres are incredibly quiet, tram lining is non-existant, and the handling and "feel" of the car is spot on. These tyres have done 8,000 miles now of often spirited driving and tread wear is at 47% front and 38% rear. Grip is excellent and inspires confidence in all all conditions (I have not yet tried them in snow or ice). They have never lost traction in the dry, and are as good as any I've used in the wet. The front tyres do sometimes come unstuck when hitting lift (power cam over 6,200 rpm) in second gear on wet roads, but any loss of grip is only momentarily and the car still feels stable and controlled. For a light car with agile handling such as the Celica, I can highly recommend the Avon ZZ5s. They are at least as good if not better than any of the premium brand tyres I have used, are British made and are significantly cheaper. Would definately buy again.

Given 76% while driving a Fiat 500 Abarth (205/40 R17 W) on a combination of roads for 2,000 spirited miles
Had these fitted to replace Pirelli P Zero Nero. Good grip, good price and overall happy. Only downside they are a bit noisy on my Abarth 500.

Given 63% while driving a Ford Focus RS (235/35 R19 W) on a combination of roads for 3,000 spirited miles
They are a great tyre but id say more suited to lower powered cars. Cornering is excellent for mid range tyre and so is braking. Good tyre in the wet, nice and progressive lets you know when its getting to the limit of grip nicely. Tried on the front and rear and was great on the rear, no problems in wet or dry. As I say my only criticism is putting power down in lower gears, my focus RS is 390bhp and deals with its power great and on a hot dry day still see esp light flashing on full chat. where as with continental I never saw this, 100 - 250bhp id say would be fantastic!

Given 84% while driving a Nissan 350z (225/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 500 spirited miles
I have just put these on my nissan 350 z gt. Having had dunlop sport maxx rt on the rear that lasted 4000 miles. So far I have driven in dry and damp conditions and have not noticed any difference in grip at all but they are quieter than the dunlops. So they are cheaper but so far so good. I can't comment on wear but I would hope that they last loner than the dunlops but if not at least they are far cheaper.

Given 31% while driving a Mercedes Benz E350 (235/40 R18 W) on a combination of roads for 16,000 average miles
This is the worst tyre I have driven a rear wheel drive car on. The tyre is okay in the dry, but in the wet they are terrible, the car can break away from you without warning. The fuel economy is awful too. 25% more fuel used on these tyres compared to Conti Sports. However the worst thing about this tyre is the noise and vibration. Its horrendous. After 16k miles I went back to a set of Conti Sports and instantaneously fuel economy jumped, the noise and vibration stop and the car would actually turn into a roundabout in the wet without losing grip. I can therefore not recommend these tyres for a high performance rear wheel drive car.

Given 57% while driving a Volvo S80 2.5T BSR 2008 model (240/40 R18 W) on a combination of roads for 8,000 average miles
Only had these on our Volvo S80 2.5t se sport good mix of roads, single, double and motorway. Nothing wrong with the tyres performance wise just the wear is horrendous, they have only lasted 6 months! on the front the rears are still good and should last another 6. I have used Avons on all my other cars but sadly they are not for the Volvo.

BMW 320 d (225/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 15,000 average miles
Let’s do a b4 and after road test - like all drivers cost of tires is a major factor, plus when faced with replacing BMW recommended run flats cost considerations increases.

You should also note replacing RF with normal cheaper tires too check with your insurance company first. As I understand matters it seems if you replace all 4 (four) with the same brand/type this DOES NOT invalidate your insurance. However you CAN NOT have a mix of RF and normal tires, somehow this is the rule - daft and I agree but if you were stopped the lights and some ran into the back of your car your insurance companies WILL use this as an excuse NOT to pay out - be warned!

Okay the B4 test - currently I have the stock Bridgestone RF tires from new and as any BMW owner will notice after 26K of wear driving style gets a little twitchy or tail happy, and icy conditions may require an adult nappy at moderate speeds.

All 4 (four) will be changed on Wednesday with this cheaper counterpart - have done 28K on the original set from new – is the cheaper set any better, well time will tell?

Given 97% while driving a Jaguar S Type 4.2 Sport Plus (245/40 R18 W) on a combination of roads for 2,000 spirited miles
The car sticks like glue to the road, wet or dry, it really feels like I'm driving a go-cart, brings a smile to my face every time I drive it. Replaced a mixed bag of ms-matched cheap tyres on the front and Pirelli P-Zeros on the back, noticed the difference straight away - suddenly the car was stable in corners and felt so much safer at speed. Too soon to say how well they last, but you CANNOT get long life AND sporty grip, no matter what anyone may tell you!

Given 100% while driving a Ford Fiesta ST (205/40 R17) on mostly country roads for 0 spirited miles
Just had a full set of these fitted to my fiesta st. What can I say, from driving out the garage with these on the road noise is reduced and ride quality seems so much better than my previous Avon zz3. I tried to replace the zz3 with another set of zz3's but for some reason the garage couldn't get them in my size so I ended up getting the zz5's instead. I'm happy that I did. These seem to be even better than the zz3's when it comes to grip and ride quality in both wet and dry. I have deffinetelly noticed better grip in wet weather on the same stretch of road I often go down.
I have had all sorts of tyres on the st…

Yokohama a539's - these were dangerous. In the dry they were good but in the wet it was like driving on ice, they were so unpredictable, you could just loose control with normal driving.

Wanli s9000 - decided to try these knowing they were a budget tyre. What a mistake!!! After a while they started going down. I thought I must have a puncture but I didn't. Basically they were leaking round the rim so I ended up having to buy a another full set. This is when I decided to buy a quality brand.

Avon zz3 - this was the first set of tyres that I was truly happy with. A quality brand, great grip in the dry good grip in the wet.

Avon zz5 - recently had these fitted. I knew I wanted another set of Avons considering the price is great and the quality is fantastic. As far as I'm concerned you won't get better for the price, these seem even better than the zz3's, dry and wet grip is fantastic road noise is reduced and ride quality is improved over my previous set. I will certainly stick to avons. It's nice knowing you have quality rubber underneath you that you can trust.

I hope this review helps. The moral of the story is, from my experience buying cheap doesn't work, infact it ends you costing you more in the long run. If your into your fast cars and require good rubber I would recommend Avon...
