The 2018 ADAC all season test has tested nine 175/65 R14 all season tyres, with a summer and winter tyre as comparison. All eleven tyres were put through dry, wet, snow, ice and wear testing, and unusually the hugely successful Michelin CrossClimate finished in last place!

Everyone knows tyre performance changes with wear, with the biggest change in tyre performance coming from all season and winter tyres in snowy and icy conditions.

The drop in performance can be so vast after 4mm that certain countries where "three peak mountain and snowflake" tyres are a legal requirement for winter driving, they can lose their legality after 4mm, meaning you only get to use half of your tyres tread.

Should this be the case? Michelin have been making alot of noise recently regarding the negative impact of having to scrap a tyre with half its tread life remaining, and their arguments are compelling. Not only are you costing the customer more, but you're also causing a much higher negative environmental impact by doubling natural resourse usage and doubling waste.

Continental WinterContact TS 860

The German publication Auto Zeitung have just published their 2017 all season tyre test, and it might be the most UK relevant tyre test we've ever seen.

First, they're testing in the most popular 205/55 R16 size using a FWD Audi A3, which represents a large slice of our car market. Then, they've managed to include ten all season patterns, which is more than most all season tyre tests manage, but the icing on the cake is the winter tyre included for reference is the multiple award winning Continental WinterContact TS 860.

Michelin CrossClimate

The 2017 Auto Bild All Season Tyre Test puts eight 225/50 R17 all season tyres through the usual dry, wet and snow testing, and includes a reference summer and winter tyre for benchmarks.

The two all season heavyweights of the industry, the Michelin CrossClimate and the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-2, trade results to tie overall in first place. As each of these all season tyres approaches year round motoring in different ways, we'll concentrate on the top two places for this write up.

The 2016 ACE magazine all season tyre test covers ten all season tyres in the popular 205/55 R16 tyre size using a VW Golf, and includes a summer and winter tyre as benchmarks.

Once again, the test highlights the fact that current all season tyres, with the exception of the Michelin CrossClimate, should be considered as slightly tweaked winter tyres and have all the drawbacks of the winter rubber in warm dry and wet conditions.

It's not often we see a proper off road tyre test, but this one by the South African Magazine "Drive Out" seems to tick all the boxes.

It takes ten mud terrain (M/T) tyres in 265/75 R16, sticks them on a 4x4 Ford Ranger pickup truck, and puts them through wet, gravel, rock and endurance tests to find out which tyre will be the most useful for hardcore off road use.

The UK climate represents a difficult challenge for car tyres. Warm enough to require a tyre that works well at higher temperatures, but not warm enough to make a summer tyre the best choice year round.

Can you run one tyre year round?

Until recently, tyres have fallen into three distinct categories: summer, all season and winter tyres. Traditionally, all season tyres have been developed from a winter tyre origins, which give them excellent snow performance but can impact dry and wet performance, especially in the warmer months. This year, Michelin have released the CrossClimate, which if the marketing is to be believed, promises to be a second type of all season tyre, one which started life as a summer tyre and has been gifted winter capabilities.

Is a summer and winter tyre combination the only safe option? Has the second generation Goodyear all season moved the game on? Can the new Michelin CrossClimate live up to the marketing hype? That's what we're here to find out.
