Summer Tyre Tests

The first summer tyre test of 2016 is a curious one. ACE, the Automobile Club Europa, are often first to publish their regular summer tyre tests, but this year their first tyre test exclusively features midrange tyres.

Testing ten 195/65 R15 tyres on a VW Golf, ACE argue that the most important consideration for 90% of motorists is price, which is why they've chosen to tests tyres as cheap as 35/euros per tyre.

The best tyre test from the UK press is finally here - the EVO 2015 tyre test.

The 2015 Auto Express tyre test covers eleven patterns in the popular 225/45 R17 size.  Testing at Continentals test track in Texas, Auto Express used the benchmark VW Golf to carry out nine thorough tests covering dry and wet performance, along with rolling resistance and cabin noise.

The Russians always put on an interesting tyre test. Usually, their tyre tests crun big, ultra high performance tyres on powerful cars, and give an excellent account of just how each tyre feels on the limit. This time, it's a little bit different...

It's not often we report on tyre tests from across the pond. The tyres, roads, and driving conditions can be very different, especially in North America, however this test from the Australian magazine "Australian Motor" was too interesting / random to miss.

We like technical data, and Auto Bild Belarus have gone the extra mile with their 2015 215/55 R16 tyre test. 

With the UK being the largest optional "big wheel" upgrader in Europe, you'd have thought the likes of EVO and Auto Express would test a bigger tyre size than the usual 17" size they choose! Fortunately, Germany has the answer, and this year Sport Auto Magazine tested seven patterns in 235/35 R19, the most common 19" tyre size on the market, using a VW Golf R. 

The 2015 Off Road Magazine SUV and 4x4 tyre test covered 9 tyres in 225/55 R18 on a Mercedes ML250. 

Following on from the 53 tyre wet and dry braking shootout, Auto Bild have tested the top 18 tyres more thoroughly, putting them through the usual mix of wet, dry, wear and NVH tests in 185/60 R15 on a VW Polo.

 With over two hundred different tyres available for the chosen 225/50 R17 tyre size, Auto Motor Und Sport decided to pick the top nine best European label scoring tyres to test on their Mercedes C Class, presuming they would be getting the top nine tyres on the market. 

For the 2015 ultra high performance tyre test, Auto Bild have chosen the new BMW M4, wearing 275/35 R19 rear and 255/35 R19 fronts. While this limits the amount of tyres available to test to just seven, it is a very good test car as the M4 is the benchmark for the current breed of big-wheeled super-saloons!

Test World this year again tested a range of 205/55 R16 tyres, including a mix of premium, mid-range and budget brands.

Here at TyreReviews we always get excited when EVO publish a tyre test. Normally tyre tests focus on raw numbers, dedicating pages to telling you which tyre has 0.1% more grip, but forgetting to mention how the tyres actually feel on the car.

Conversely EVO spend plenty of time, and dedicate 60% of the overall result, to subjective handling. With the difference in grip between the best tyres on the market ever shrinking, explaining how the tyres actually feel to use give people who enjoy driving a good reference point. This years test was carried out at the Bridgestone test track in Italy, on a VW Golf GTI wearing 225/45 R17 tyres.

The 2014 Auto Express Summer Tyre Test is here, and it is closer than ever! Testing 10 tyres in 205/55 R16, Auto Express put the tyres through the usual array of nine stringent tests in the dry and wet.

Unlike the average car driver, motorbike riders have an intimate relationship with their tyres, and fully understand the need to fit the right tyre for your riding style and intended use. Sometimes lasting less than 2,000 miles, the right tyre can literally mean the difference between a safe ride home in the wet, or a nasty highside resulting in a damaged bike, and potentially worse, a damaged body.
