While it's true that SUVs, 4x4s and four wheel drive vehicles can offer improved traction in the snow over their two wheel drive counterparts, they sadly don't offer any advantages under braking and steering, mean if you want to keep mobile in all conditions, winter tyres can help.

As proven in many a video, buying a 4x4 doesn't necessarily mean good winter performance. A good all wheel drive system can offer better traction than a 2wd car, however once moving if the 4x4 is on standard summer tyres it will only be able to steer and brake as well as any other vehicle on the road.

As proven in this video, owning a 4x4 off vehicle is no substitute for being on the correct tyre during the winter months.
Auto Bild have recently tested 8 tyres in 215/65 r16 on a Volvo XC70 for dry, wet and snow performance. As always the results were close amongst the premium brands, with Dunlop just beating Continental to the top spot.
