Methodology & Configuration
Scoring Process
  1. Collect Test Data: Gather results from professional tyre tests across multiple publications. Minimum 1 test(s) required.
  2. Normalize Positions: Convert test positions to percentile scores using exponential weighting (factor: 1.2).
  3. Apply Recency Weighting: More recent tests are weighted higher with a decay rate of 0.95.
  4. Incorporate User Reviews: Factor in user review data (minimum 5 reviews). Weight: 15%.
  5. Bayesian Smoothing: Apply Bayesian prior (score: 7, weight: 1.5) to prevent extreme scores with limited data.
  6. Calculate Final Score: Combine all components using normalization factor of 1.1. Max score with limited data: 9.5.

Can you drive on these tires year round?

You can, however you would have vastly reduced grip in the summer conditions so it is definitely not advised to.

Top 3 Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 SUV Reviews

Given 78% while driving a Toyota 2014 Highlander (245/55 R19) on a combination of roads for 2,000 average miles
I have been using this set of tires for 4 winters and they grip very well in the snow, the comfort is also good, wear out very low. My car is a HIGHLANDER 3.5 AWD, lock the center diff, I can start up with more than 80% throttle in the snow, without skid, and brake confidently, but for snowless surfaces, this is not a good model. If the temperature rises above 7°C and you haven't switch back to all-season tires, the R2 will wear out faster than you thought, and the noise is also noticeable. I think it's only suitable for users in areas with heavy snow. Snow-covered road conditions, the R2 makes your 4WD unstopable. If you live in a temperate region and have limited average annual snowfall, don't waste this great set of snow tires, you should save a lot of money by buying a set of all-season tires.

Really disappointed to see these tires are no longer available. They are great tires and have purchased several sets for multiple vehicles. It doesn't look like the replacement models are getting as good of reviews. Might be time to look for a different brand.

Given 93% while driving a Honda 2009 CRV (205/70 R15) on a combination of roads for 25,000 average miles
I have these tires on my 2nd generation Honda CRV. I live in British Columbia, Canada where we have 5 to 6 months of Winter with snow and ice and temperatures of down to -50 C plus windchill. These were my first Nokian tires but I have been so pleased with their performance I now have three different sets for two vehicles. These tires work with the AWD of the CRV to deliver a feeling of real security on bad winter roads. Tire wear has been minimal, I expect to get at least 10 years use out of mine because I drive less than average each year and change over to all season Nokian’s in the Spring.

Given 92% while driving a Suzuki (225/65 R17) on a combination of roads for 10,000 average miles
In snow and on ice ice never had better. Especially in the snowy/icy mountains going uphill I am often the only one able to go up, even without engaging 4High or even 4Low.
On dry with low temperatures grip is great. Once the temperature goes up above 7 Celsius, then you sometimes feel that taking corners could be better. Less tight.
It doesn't rain much in winter, but slush is no problem whatsoever. Pure rain doesn't bring Aquaplaning, but don't remember anything noteworthy.
Best winter Tyre I owned thus far. Wear after 10000 kilometers is not noticeable.
Noise is more than a summer Tyre, but less than an AT. Speeds above 120 km/h it becomes noticeable.

Given 100% while driving a Toyota RAV4 (225/65 R17) on a combination of roads for 0 average miles
This is my second season with the tryes and i have found them to be excellent on all road conditions. i now drive in snow like I am on dry pavement. On other snow tires i was usually one of the people at the end of a long line.but now these tires have given me the total confidence to move out onto the passing lane.As i drive I can see the headlights from the long line of cars fading into the distance.it is such a pleasure at 69 years of age to be able to feel so secure on the road.in the past I used to dread the onset of winter. Now I scream Hakkapellita, and say bring me your worst.

Tires are excellent in snow when accelerating and driving straight. But in lateral grip the tires are really bad. You cant take any curves or turn in a street without feeling the car slide sideways a little bit, even in slow speeds and even on dry roads. I had the vredestein wintrac on a sports rear wheel drive car before and it performed much better. I bought the Nokian R2 suv because they were new tires from Nokian with newer technology but it seems like they missed out on a few things.
On ice and on dry roads theyre not that good.
In wet they are pretty good. No aquaplaning at all.
I drive different kind of cars with different types of tires and all i can say is there is better than this for a brand that says they are the best in winter...winter is not only about snow, but slush, rain, cold, freeze, wet, dry...these tires dont feel right.
