In this test, we selected 6 of the best ultra-high-performance winter tyres, and compared them against all-season and summer tyres to reveal their true capabilities. We evaluated their performance in dry, wet, snow, and ice conditions, along with comfort, noise, and rolling resistance. The results were remarkably close, and the data from the all season and summer tyres is really interesting.

This is the 2024/25 Tyre Reviews All Season Tyre Test! For this test, I have selected six of the best all season tyres in the large 235/35 R19 tyre size, and I'm using a MK8 VW Golf GTI to find out exactly which all season tyre is best in the larger wheel size.

To give this test extra depth, I also have six ultra high performance winter tyres in exactly the same size, and I've included a summer tyre. With this relatively small test field I've managed to test everything as one test, which means a common control allowing us to cross reference the data. This has shown us how the very best all season tyres compare to the very best summer and winter tyres in the snow, ice, dry and wet. There's some really interesting insight into how the all season tyres compare to the other categories below.

2024 Minivan / SUV All Season Tyre Test

For the 2024 AutoBild Camper test, Autobild tested the popular 235/55 R17 size. While they used a camper van for the test, this tyre dimension is commonly found on a variety of vehicles, including SUVs such as the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, and even some family cars like the Volkswagen Passat Alltrack.

The Michelin CrossClimate 2 emerged as the clear winner, earning top marks across all test categories. It demonstrated exceptional performance in winter conditions, with impressive traction and handling on snow and ice. The tyre also excelled in wet conditions, offering excellent aquaplaning resistance and short braking distances. On dry roads, it provided precise handling and low rolling resistance, contributing to fuel efficiency.

The Best Studded / Friction Winter Tyres for 2024

The 2024 winter tyre test conducted by Teknikens Värld, a Swedish automotive magazine, evaluated 18 different tyres across various categories, including studded, Nordic non-studded, and Central European winter tyres. The test also included two used tyres to demonstrate how performance changes over time. 

The magazine crowned an overall winner, which we feel is a bit of an odd choice given the differing target requirements. The overall winner of the test was the Continental ContiVikingContact 8, a Nordic non-studded tyre that demonstrated excellent all-round performance. It maintained the strong winter capabilities of its predecessor while significantly improving wet performance and rolling resistance. This proved manufacturers are working to address the traditional weaknesses of Nordic non-studded tyres, particularly in wet conditions.

2024 All Season Tyre Market Overview

The 2024 Autobild All Season tyre test tested 37 premium touring all-season tyres in the 225/50 R17 size, focusing on dry and wet braking performance. The test reveals a significant performance gap between the top and bottom performers, especially in wet conditions. The Bridgestone Turanza All Season 6 emerged as the standout performer, excelling in both dry and wet braking tests. It was closely followed by the Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF3 and Continental AllSeasonContact 2. The test highlighted that while many tyres performed adequately in dry conditions, wet performance varied dramatically, with some budget options showing alarming results. This overview serves as a preliminary assessment, with top performers likely to advance to more comprehensive testing.

2024 ADAC 16 Inch Winter Tyre Test

For 2024 ADAC have tested two sizes of winter tyres. The below test covers the 16" version. There's nothing particularly shocking in the overall results, so enjoy the data, which includes wear, below!

2024 Winter 55 Tyre Braking Test

Autobild are back at it again, this year testing a massive 55 winter tyres in wet braking, then taking the top 33 to a snow braking test, all to find out the safest 20 winter tyres in the wet and snow to put through to their full test!

Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady 2 - Launched

Goodyear has introduced the Assurance WeatherReady 2, a new all-weather tyre that claims to set a new performance standard in the category. Building on the success of its predecessor, this second-generation model boasts significant improvements in wet and dry handling, enhanced all-weather capabilities, and a V pattern directional tread pattern.

2024 ADAC All Season Tyre Test

Famously, ADAC are not fans of all season tyres, seeing them as too compromised for year round motoring and insisting that a summer and winter tyre combination is superior.

This means ADAC have not tested all season tyres since 2020, so lets see if the modern batch of all season tyres can change ADACs mind!

2024 EV Tyre Test

The Auto Bild 2024 summer tyre test for electric vehicles (EVs) in the 235/55 R19 size aimed to compare the performance of standard and specialized EV tyres to determine if EV-specific tyres offer significant advantages over their conventional counterparts. The test included eight tyre models: the Continental PremiumContact 7, Falken e.Ziex [ev specific], Hankook iON evo SUV [ev specific], Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6, GT Radial SportActive 2 EV [ev specific], Bridgestone Potenza Sport, and Goodride ZuperEco Z-107.

2024 Sports Car All Season Tyre Test

This year Autobild has published a second all season tyre test, this time in their sports car specific publication. The test uses a sporty Subaru BRZ to test eleven sets of 225/40 R18 all season tyres in the dry, wet and snow.

To help illustrate the differences between all season, summer and winter tyres the tester included a reference summer and winter tyre. Overall the tyres performed as you would expect, the summer tyre was by far the best in the dry and wet, but dangerously unusable in the snow and had the highest rolling resistance (which was a bit of a surprise), whereas the winter tyre was almost last in every dry and wet test, but performed much better in the snow (but not the best in snow braking or snow handling!)

Nokian Remedy WRG5 - Launched

As the popularity of all-weather tyres rapidly grows in many areas of North America, Nokian has refreshed its offering to cater to this market. The new Nokian Remedy WRG5 replaces the much loved Nokian WRG4, and offers improved snow and ice traction, and higher levels of wet grip over the WRG4, without sacrificing rolling resistance or dry/wet handling.

2023/24 Best All Terrain Tyres In Snow

Following on from last years on-road and off-road test of nine all terrain tyres, we've taken seven of them through to a full snow test, and tested them against the one of the best rated US all season tyres, the Michelin Defender LTX and our favourite winter tyre, the Michelin X-Ice Snow (SUV variant).

As the group of all terrain tyres is a mix of snow rated and non snow rated all terrain tyres, it means we'll not only know what the best all terrain tyre is on snow, but we can also answer whether a snow rating is worth purely basing your purchase decision on, AND we'll be able to find out if a very good snow rated all terrain tyre is a safe replacement for a winter tyre in the snow.

2023 Tyre Reviews UHP All Season Tyre Test

In this test I'll be comparing 7 of the most popular ultra high performance all season tires to find out which tire is best for you.

If you've read any of my previous all season tests, you'll be happy to know that six of the tires in this test I've never tested before, and they include the brand new Pirelli P Zero AS 3 Plus and the brand new Falken Azenis FK460AS. The tire I have tested before is one of the benchmarks of the segment, the Continental ExtremeContact DWS06+, so if you want to, you'll have a cross reference points to compare the tires in this test to the tires in the previous tests.

As always I'll be digging into the dry, wet, comfort and noise performance of the tires, then in a later test I'll be looking at the snow performance, to give you a really complete overview of the tires performances.
