Avon ZV7 Reviews - Page 7

Given 80% while driving a Volvo V50 estate (205/55 R16) on mostly town for 4,500 average miles
These tyres are very good performing as I would have expected from past experience.
However the tyres I have fitted to my Volvo have only covered 4500 miles and all 4 have around 7mm of tread left so loads of life in them. Except that all four tyres are cracking at the base of the treads. The sort of quality I would not expect unless they were Chinese obscure branded D rated rubbish.

Not happy at all that I now have to look for new tyres which will not be Avons.

Check yours they could be the same. Mine have two different date numbers on but these relate manufacture within a few weeks of fitting.

Given 88% while driving a Audi A4 2.8 quattro (205/55 R16 V) on mostly country roads for 2,000 spirited miles
These are the best all round tyres I have had on my Audi. They are not ultimate performance tyres, but I didnt buy them for racing. I live in the wilds of Somerset and much of my driving is on little muddy twisty lanes, with some fast A roads and the occasional motorway blast.
I chose them because I know Avon has good pedigree, they seemed like really good price - not much more than horrid budget brands - and because the tread pattern looks to be chunky and rugged. And it is, if anything more so than the pictures show. This I think is important as they have to deal with all kinds of terrain on my car.
I fitted them last year and they were quiet and comfortable in the hot remainder of summer, surefooted in the rain, and just incredible in the recent snow. My back lane had about a foot of snow, and the car turned out of its parking space and just drove down the lane without slipping at all.
I cannot comment on wear yet as they are still quite new to me.
I usually drive on Conti Premium Contact and I reckon these are as good - certainly for my purposes and I would buy them again.

Given 37% while driving a BMW 330 (225/45 R17 W) on a combination of roads for 2,000 spirited miles
These were a reluctant replacement for unavailable Kumho PS71. Unfortunately they are nowhere near as good, on my car at least.
The tread blocks are too mobile which gives the overall feel of nervousness and makes the handling a little woolly.
Dry grip is adequate, but on any sort of slippery or wet surface they are pretty poor breaking traction all too easily and feeling very indistinct and not confidence inspiring at all.
Road noise is worse than the Kumhos (and previous Nexens, Dunlops, etc) and the ride is compromised also.
Personally, can't recommend these and I'm waiting to see how long they last.

Given 81% while driving a Rover 75 (225/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 16,000 average miles
Would have lasted 20k miles were it not for a pot hole paid £240 fitted at Halfords. Quiet, good feed back, great in the cold and wet plus cornering was excellent. Replaced with Michelin PS4, I think I should have stayed with the Avons!

Given 57% while driving a Mercedes Benz E350 (225/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 3,000 average miles
I have a 2012 e350 and fitted these tyres only 4 months previously having had the wheel alignment done twice as I had the fronts done 2 months after. I drive very steadily, and have only done 3000 miles on them. They are evenly worn down to the canvass. The wear is staggeringly bad and I’ll be heading back to the garage to seek a refund as the previous tyres lasted well over 18 months.
The car is in excellent condition having been bought from Mercedes last year. I can only assume it’s a manufacturing issue as the car has been thoroughly checked. The fronts are fine at the moment. As they were only changed 2 months ago.

Nissan LEAF Tekna (205/50 R17 W) on mostly town for 25 easy going miles
Just had them fitted to a Nissan Leaf and upsized from 16 inch to 17, quieter and softer than the original Dunlop, but have yet to test the energy economy.

Given 83% while driving a Toyota GT86 (215/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 2,000 spirited miles
These have been great over the summer on my RWD GT86, I think they re better in the dry than the Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2's that they replaced, quieter too, but perhaps not quite a good in the wet (need more miles and wet weather to tell). I change rims to winter tyres ever year so won't be able to comment about winter use, but as a summer tyre these are great value, very good quality, and I don't regret buying them at all (and would buy them again without hesitation), the fact that they are made in the UK is also a real bonus.

Given 78% while driving a Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 TS Veloce (205/55 R16 V) on a combination of roads for 16,000 miles
These are a decent tyre which wear well. Ride quality is a plus point also as is low noise but they are less good over rougher surfaces. I also found wet grip and wet roadholding to be decent if uninspiring.

The AV7s do have negative points as well though. The tyre slip angles seem high which manifest as a generally unreactive and imprecise, albeit less so, tyre. Similarly, dry roadholding is not great (but not terrible either) and it is not hard to have the ZV7s squeal with even somewhat enthusiastic use.

Issues aside; these are a performance per £ bargain. They are a forgiving enough tyre and therefore safe which provide decent enough feedback. They do what is intended. That is; the ZV7 is an impressive touring tyre which has no sporting pretentions. It is absolutely safe, wears well and is quiet and smooth and performs subjectively better in the wet. All this for a tenner more than a cheap and nasty alternative mean the ZV7 is a good tyre which I suspect people will like more than professional test scores suggest.

Given 100% while driving a Skoda Octavia vRS (225/40 R18 W) on a combination of roads for 100 spirited miles
Got these on my Octavia VRS mk2 FL after swapping out the Michelin Pilot sports. PS were ok but expensive. The Avon ZV7s are fantastic value, I’ve only tested in the current summer and dry but definately feels as equally as grippy as the Michelin’s. I also had the ZV5’s on my old Lexus IS250 and was happy then also but the Octy a
Is a different type of car.

Given 80% while driving a Jaguar X Type Estate 2.0D (225/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 12,000 spirited miles
An update on my previous review. I completed 12000 miles on the Avon ZV7's. They were fitted to the front of my Jag and were very close to the limit. I drive all types of roads and they coped very well in all weather's. I was impressed overall but I still think Goodyear make a better all round tyre. The tyres were in good shape after the hard miles they did and if you are looking for a great mid range tyre with top level abilities for a lower price, go with these.

Given 96% while driving a Volkswagen Passat 2.0TDI (235/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 3,000 spirited miles
Good tyres wet or dry, give plenty of feedback, also quiet running and so far the wear rate looks good, I will be buying these again.

Alfa Romeo (225/45 R17) on mostly country roads for 2,000 average miles
World of difference from firestone in noise levels road holding seems very good in dry , not out much in rain yet but appeared to be acceptable, basically very good tyre for cost and definitely as good as many other in higher price bracket . Would be more than happy to purchase these tyres again ....
