2021-03-22 - Help. I have bought a Mercedes ML320 cdi Reg GV09AVM. It is currently fitted with 21inch amg alloy wheels and Haida tyres. I knew the ride was bad but loved the vehicle so much I still bought. Now I have driven two it has given reflux so longer can drive it however much I want to! I need to replace the wheels and tyres with ones which give me maximum comfort. I can buy brand new 18" Mercedes Mintaka Wheels for £311 plus vat - a lot cheaper than anything else - and I am thinking of buying Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 SUV to go with them. My problem is the Mercedes car manual does not recommend the use of a summer tyre and says only specific all weather tyres can be used (it says contact a dealer to confirm which tyres can be used). If I go for the combination I am looking at / 1 will the combination fit the vehicle ok / 2 are there any risks I need to be aware off / 3 is there a possible better option re choice of tyre for maximum comfort / 4 are there any insurance issues or concerns / 5 finally is there anything else I need to know

I think moving to an 18" wheel will bring such vast improvements the tyre choice is almost secondary! (but the asymmetric 5 is a great option.) Unfortunately I can't specifically advise on fitment, but I would guess as long as you fit the size specified in the vehicle handbook everything will be fine. There will be no difference fitting summer / all season / winter wheels, and you should definitely let your insurance company know you're changing wheels.

It’s hard to give an SUV tyre on a Touareg a handling score however they definitely felt much more planted than the Pirelli Scorpions before them. A very quiet and efficient tyre that performed very well in nearly every condition. Mostly stop start town miles and after 2 years and 15,000 miles the tyre treads are at 4mm all round. My P Zeros on a previous car lasted less than 10,000 miles. My only criticism of the tyre is it’s terrible performance in snow. Despite the 4 wheel drive these give little or no grip on light snow or ice. It’s probably the only reason I’m eyeing the Michelin Cross Climate for my next tyre otherwise I’d 100% recommend these tyres

Can be noisy on expressway surfaces although Very comfortable. Steering can change from understeer to oversteer due to soft sidewalls P zero's steer better and are quieter although much higher treadwear

I just switched from Pirelli Scorpion Verde (Seal Inside) to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asy 3 SUV. First review at 3000km after switching. These GY Eagle SUV tyres are definitely a more comfortable ride than the Scorpions. Softer rubbers provide very good grip in dry and excellent grip,control in wet. Do see a drop in fuel economy as the softer rubbers leads to higher rolling resistance, and these tyres are really heavy! The previous Pirelli Scorpion Verdes are way too hard and noisy especially after 30,000km. This set of GY Eagle SUV is definitely a good compromise for the comfort and excellent grip control.

Given 84% while driving a Volkswagen TOUAREG V6 TDI (275/45 R20) on mostly town for 20,000 spirited miles
Have run these tyres for three years and they have almost reached 20000 miles, mainly town driving. Depending on the road surface they can be noisy but generally are pretty quiet. I noticed some feathering on the outer rims at about 15000 miles but I understand that this can be quite common on some Touaregs. My main reason for buying these tyres was their expected longevity and I have not been disappointed. I consider 20000 to be good wear from a tyre, particularly considering the weight of the Touareg. I am due to change the rear tyres soon and may stick with the Goodyear but might give the Uniroyal Rainsport a try as they seem to be a very competitive price just now.

I changed from the pirelli p zero that felt solid compared to the Goodyear. As for the noise, they seem to be the same. The good year look more beefy and also come with rim protection which is great. Looking foward to trying out the asymmetric 5s.

Great handling superb comfort and excellent wear, these are the main assets of the assymetrics, although on the down side theres noise, they are quite succeptible to the highway different compounds , they can go from zero sound to a loud sound on a different compound , of course all tyres are succeptible to this althouh these seem to be moodier to these changes. but thats my only critisism ... on the other side you can feel how much precise the car is and the handling it will not depend on the tyre anymore, iltll depend on the car chasis to match the tyre performance.

Took original Pirelli Scorpions off vague steering and poor cornering fitted Eagle F1 much better steering response and better feel whilst cornering.
