BMW Z4 35i Tyre Review Highlights

Writing about the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 given 100% (225-45-17-)
Driving on mostly country roads for 400 spirited miles
I purchased a 35i BMW Z4 from a family member, it was fitted with Bridgestone Potenza run flat tyres, new ones at the rear and well worn at the front. The car tramlined constantly, grip was poor at the front and lane changing was unbelievably scary. I took the decision to fit the latest Goodyear Asymmetric 5 tyres all round and the transformation is unreal, I did also have a 4 wheel alignment performed but it was largely fine and the worst mis-alignment was 0.21 degrees so I do not think that has contributed to the change. The car is now stable and calm, there is zero tramlining, bumps do nothing to upset the car, changing lanes is now a joy. Cabin noise levels are also significantly lower. Wet grip is impressive and in 400 miles of driving, much of it on wet roads, I have not managed to provoke the traction light even pulling out of junctions and being spirited. By contrast the Bridgestone tyres shocked me by flashing the traction light in the dry on a bend I regularly sailed round at the same speed in a 54 year old sports car!
To sum up, the run flat Bridgestone Potensa tyres were horrible and dangerous and the Goodyear Asymmetric 5 have given me the car I expected, the difference is total. Z4 owners buy them and change your life!!!

Writing about the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A given 33% (225-45-17-)
Driving on mostly country roads for 20000 spirited miles
I purchased a BMW Z4 from a family relative and it was fitted with the Bridgestone Potenza RA050A run flats. The first thing I noticed was the disturbing tendency to tram line, the car was constantly fidgeting on the road. The second issue was very serious, the car would effectively slalom when pulling in after an overtake. It was terrifying! The Potenza’s fitted to the rear were new (1400 miles use) on the front they were worn with the front offside down to the legal limit.
I took the decision to fit Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 5 tyres all round and at the same time I had a 4 wheel alignment performed. Whilst some settings were out of spec the maximum was 0.21 degrees too little camber on the left rear tyre so I don’t think this had any impact on the handling.
The car on F1s has, quite simply, transformed. It is calming, smooth and predictable. One Z4 owner described the fitting of Bridgestone Potenza RA050A tyres to that chassis as ‘treachery’, I now agree.

Writing about the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Run Flat given 24% (225-35-19-W)
Driving on a combination of roads for 0 spirited miles
The worst tyres I have ever had the misfortune to have on a car. The BMW Z4 has a stiff chassis to start with. The Run Flats made every bump and pot hole excruciating. They probably caused the crack in my windscreen and definitely responsible for the cracked rim. Just replaced them with Goodyear Eagle F1's. A world of difference.

Writing about the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Run Flat given 57% (225-30-19-)
Driving on a combination of roads for 10 average miles
No major opinions either way on the Bridgestones. The biggest issue was with them being low-profile runflats, meaning they were not particularly comfortable (especially with the pretty firm suspension on the Z4!) and caused a crack in one of the front alloys.

The rears are completely shot after 10,000 miles, but are dealing with over 300bhp, a fair bit of camber, and some ocassionally "boisterous" B-road driving, so haven't done too badly really. The fronts have still got a good few thousand miles left on them.

The dry grip was pretty good, but not especially progressive. They gripped well up to a point, then just seemed to let go, but did come back into line reasonably easily in fairness.

I wouldn't buy them again purely because I think there are better tyres out there for the money. I'm replacing the back 2 with a pair of Hankook k107's so we'll see how they compare...
