Ford Escape Tyre Review Highlights

Writing about the Falken Wildpeak AT Trail given 85% (235-50-18-)
Driving on a combination of roads for 25000 easy going miles
The Falken AT Trail's offer a better ride and driving experience than the OEM Continentals. Only minimal loss of fuel economy and not discernible increase in road noise. They really come into their own on gravel roads, but also perform excellently on tarmac.

225 55 19 Bridgestone Etopia ep422 plus These tires came on my new 2022 Ford Escape as an upgrade. Handled well in all weather, good fuel mileage. Had to replace all four by 50,000 kms. By 40,000 kms started getting more road noise. Belts let go in tires ending up with vibrations and sounding like an old set of snow tires. 119,000 kms warranty with lifespan of 50,000kms. Replaced with Michelin Defender 2. What a difference!

Driving on for 20000 miles
A great crossover tyre at an affordable price. Mostly highway driving with some gravel back roads and a little beach/ sand driving. Only minimal wear after 23,000 km. No discernible difference in road noise and only slight drop in economy. Car performing much better than stock Continentals it came with.

Driving on a combination of roads for 54000 average miles
These tires were on a new 2019 Ford Escape and driven easily by a senior. 40% was high speed freeway driving at 115km/hr-120.
They lasted to 54k km and I could have stretched another 60k km if I was not going into winter.
Very early tread wearout and I won't buy again. Also one tire belt failed so I bought a new set of 4 at 54k km.

Writing about the Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 given 97% (225-55-19-)
Driving on a combination of roads for 65 spirited miles
Purchased a set of four of these tires to replace OEM tires (which were poor-performing even in light snow and had 2/3 their tread left) on my AWD mid-size SUV. Couldn’t be more pleased with these tires. Their performance, comfort and quality have proven to be second-to-none. I drive A LOT (60k+ miles per year mix city/highway/cross-country driving) and in a variety of weather types and these tires have never disappointed me…whether it driving through the heavy thunderstorms of the Midwest or the snowy mountain roads of the Rockies and PWN, these tires have outperformed themselves and have exceeded my expectations by far. Gravel roads, sandy beaches and light muddy dirt roads were nothing for these tires to get through comfortably. I rotate them every 3,000-5,000 miles and they’ve worn evenly across the board. I’ve got about 65,000 miles on this set and they’ve grown a tad bit louder as the tires are now nearing their wear indicators, but that’s to be expected and is barely noticeable. Even as I’m nearing the wear indicators, the tires do great in heavy rain and snow (just took them through 11 inches of snow up Mt Hood in Oregon last weekend with zero concerns). I love them so much I just ordered my second set. Give them a go…I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with their performance.

Writing about the Continental EcoContact 6 given 47% (225-60-18-)
Driving on mostly town for 0 easy going miles
Conti Eco Contact 6 came on my new car I recently bought and I am not happy with these tires right from the start - these tires are ECO and have harder rubber giving lower rolling resistance hence better gas mileage at the cost of mediocre comfort levels, dubious performance in both dry and wet and average bump feel meaning they translate nearly every bump in the road without much absorption - I have reduced the air pressure from 34 down to 32 psi which has given some relief and a slight but noticeable softer drive - best way to describe these tires are a compromise on every aspect to improve mileage but at the cost of having average dry and wet performance, average wet handling and braking, noisy and have low comfort in fact so low that it has driven me to research for better tires and has led me to this website - so far I am considering upgrading to Coopers or Goodrich or Michelin Primacy, or Bridgestone Dueler or even the Pirelli Scorpions which I had on my previous car and were much better and more compliant with my style of driving which does not include driving the car on the edge of the tires performance levels on every bend in the road as some maniacs do all the time

Writing about the Firestone WinterForce 2 given 93% (215-60-17-)
Driving on mostly country roads for 17000 spirited miles
Being forced to buy directional snow tires now sucks, just getting that out of the way. I bought these for last winter to try out something different than the Sumitomo Ice Edge that I used for the previous 3 winters, with excellent results mind you. These Firestones are actually a better tire IMO. They seem to be wearing more even than the Ice Edge and are by far more quiet. I live on a huge hill, we get 280-330 inches of snow fall a year and I head for work before the plows clear my road and usually I am pushing snow with the bumper and even over the hood. This is a real world review, not a sissy city driving bitchfest about how a tire is noisy, real life chit here and I need a tire that works. Perfect tire for my extreme needs and will buy another set for sure.

Writing about the Goodyear Ultragrip Ice given 51% (235-55-17-)
Driving on mostly town for 15000 average miles
Use these in winter only. Pretty good in snow. Not too good and could even say very poor when accelerating from stopped in icy conditions. Main concern is the inner sidewall on one of the set of four splitting at seam. Three other tires are fine. Checked for recalls and found none. Presently attempting to get some info from Goodyear Canada and the system has me on hold now for 25 minutes and no agent yet, make that 30 minutes.

Driving on a combination of roads for 9200 average miles
These Michelin Latitude Tour tires ride well and are quiet. However tread wear on these OEM tires is terrible, 15,000 kms on them after they were supplied new on a Ford Escape and they are worn down from 11/32 when new to 5/32 remaining, 55% of the tread is worn off. My friend also had these Michelins supplied OEM on a Chev Equinox and experienced the same results, in one year of average driving from new his tires wore off to the point they had to be replaced, he wrote a very sharply worded letter to Michelin for all the good it did. In the fine print with your new vehicles paperwork Michelin has now stopped providing a tread wear warranty on these when they come OEM on a new vehicle. I don’t know what the difference is between when these are supplied new on a vehicle as compared to when you buy them as replacements but some people are reporting great tread life when they’ve bought these off the shelf.

Driving on for 65 miles
I bought a set of 4. My make and model Ford Escape is a BEAST in snow/ice/mud. It may be pouring down rain, but it's driver would never know it. That is, until I used these tires.

Writing about the Michelin CrossClimate 2 SUV given 79% (-45-17-)
Driving on mostly town for 350 spirited miles
I purchased a set of Cross Climate 2 tires on my dealers recommendation. I drive a 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid. The first thing I noticed was my gas mileage dropped 10% around town. This vehicle gets 42.3 miles per gallon around town. The calculation is done by the vehicle and is in your face constantly.. Immediately after mounting the Cross Climate 2 my mileage dropped to 38.5 around town. I took a trip of 285 miles on a highspeed highway. My mileage which normally would be about 38.0 mpg dropped to 31.5. (Hybrids routinely get better mileage round town than they do on high speed trips due to higher percentage of electric power usage at lower speeds.) The bottom line is my fuel economy dropped 10% to 20%. I returned to my dealer. He scoffed at my mileage claims but agreed to swap the tires for a set of Primacy Tour A/S tires. i drove out of the dealership and zeroed out my trip odometer, almost immediately my fuel usage calculations began to improve. After 75 miles of local driving my MPG is back to 43.5 MPG. the Cross Climate 2 may be a great handling tire, but it will cost you dearly in fuel usage.
