Ford Mondeo 1.6 TDCi Tyre Review Highlights

Hi, I was very surprised seeing my review (Mondeo mk4 1.6 TDCI with 225/50R17) on the top but now after almost a year I have to update my opinion. I wouldn't buy these tires again. Maybe I have only bad luck. This summer when passing through a wet roundabout I felt all 4 wheels slipping which has never happened on any other tires even when I provoked my Mondeo into such situations (Mondeo is really stable). After reaching the destination I looked at the tires. They are looking old. 9 months tires look like 3 years winter Nokians (made in Russia) or 5-8 years standard tires. Goodyear Gen2 (5-6 years?) on my wife's car looks similar as 9 months Bridgestone. This was my first tire complaint in my life. I've never had to make a tire claim before. What did I learn from the complaint letter? I don't ride enough to expose subsequent layers of rubber (about 20.000km a year) and that they sell me a night tire (I heard about winter, summer and all-weather but this first time I heard about nights tire). Night - because they said that I have overexposed the tire to sunlight. But for God's sake, the side of the tire is ideal and sun almost don't reach the tread (I've got Econetic with factory lowered suspension). What's more I've got a underground garage at work... I've posted here a picture from a complaint letter (picture done by Bridgestone) so that it is not said that I chose the worst place of the worst tire's tread. I'm afraid I bought the tires too early and they messed something up in the compound. The tire still is great on dry and OK on wet except for the bends. But I can't drive straight all the time, and I would like to feel confident when cornering on wet.

I use the tires on the Ford mondeo mk iv 1.6 tdci. The tires are extra load 95. They seem to be very stable but way too hard.. I use them in Greece so there is big climate changes. From - 5 degrees Celsius to 40...if warm weather they have a good grip but in cold weather the grip is average. Aquaplanning is sometimes a little bit too early. The ride is a bit too hard. My car has a firm ride due to the sport suspension, so I can feel any imperfections of the road.. Previously I was using goodyear efficient grip and matador mp47. Matador were the best from these three tires. All three were 215 45 17 95v. My driving style is mostly average and only a few times spirited. I have 20k on them and they seem to age in a good manner.

After 40000 km it is time to change the mp47. The verdict. Very good traction in wet and dry conditions, good traction in snow and very good wear and definitely I would buy them again. For the price or even for a premium brand it is a very good deal!

Really impressed by these tyres, have put four new ones on my Mondeo and can't fault them.

I have just put on the tires. It is the initial impression that after Goodyear efficient grip. The fell is that they r soft. They brake very well better than Goodyear and they seem to be quiter. The protection of the rim seems to be working. They r smooth ride and the cornering is adequate. More review after some klm.

So so disappointed. 2012 model 1.6 diesel Mondeo , which came factory fitted with Michelin Primacy HP's and these were typically dreadful in the wet but ok in the dry...
I'd read amazing things about the Dunlops and my choice was made for me after a serious puncture...
The grip was outstanding in the dry, tracked a true line on high speed constant radius turns, were nice and progressive in wet turns, and were quiet and reasonably comfy...
Then the shock... Less than 10k miles and they are at the 3mm line. I feel cheated , like i have thrown my cash away. If I'd known, I'd have bought conti's or pirelli's...

However have now chose Michelin Primacy 3 and these are a marked improvement on the old HP's and actually feel more comfy than the Dunlops.... won't buy these again - the wear rate is dreadful

Gand tire in the dry but shocking in the wet , driving 4000km a month and have no option but to use these as the are on a fleet vihicle. Taking off wheels spin, slides at roundabouts- worst tire I've used in years of driving

These came as OEM fit on my new 2012 Mondeo Diesel Hatchback 1.6 TDi , and i think therein lies the problem. (my frame of reference is an older Skoda Octavia wearing Conti Premium contact 2's)
the Mondeo range when specced with this tiny diesel engine, comes with sports suspension as standard. the thinking is eco eco eco , so the suspension lowers the ride height to make it more aerodynamic on the motorway - all fine, but then they fitted it with Primacy HP's.
Gahhhhh...
Dry Grip - The suspension set up helps the tyre feel the full brunt of any weight transfer, and they squeal like crazy on any corner taken above 30mph. they wash out in a VERY predictable nice way so it's enjoyable, but they do feel like you're driving on mud, triggering the electronic assists somewhat too often for my liking. Also, even for the low capacity engine, it always managed to wheelspin when trying to move off quickly, i suspect all down to the low rolling resistance compound.
Wet Grip - We had the storms over the past two weeks and the tyre has poor resistance to aquaplaning, and cornering is severely compromised.
I cant remember thinking anything either way in the snow, so i guess thery're ok on the white stuff.
MPG's - were ok i suppose, hard to compare to anything when the engine is barely run in.
Comfort - again nothing to compare against but not overly intrusive.
Buy again?
no - just swapped the fronts for Dunlop Sport Blu Response and I was impressed there was stacks of grip I'd not known before, and zero squeal when i threw the car into my favourite sweeping bend.
