Continental IceContact 3 vs Michelin X Ice North 4

This head-to-head pits two proven Nordic studded winter tyres against each other: Continental's IceContact 3 and Michelin's X-Ice North 4. Across 11 shared professional tests from 2019-2025, Michelin collects more overall wins, largely on the strength of its ice performance, while Continental often places higher in mixed-surface rankings thanks to superior asphalt manners.

The pattern is consistent: Michelin is the ice specialist, repeatedly topping ice braking, traction and handling. Continental counters with class-leading wet and dry control, shorter wet stops, and better stability and predictability on cleared roads-plus generally lower noise and, in many tests, lower rolling resistance. The choice hinges on whether you drive mostly on polished ice or frequently transition between winter and bare pavement.

Test Results

Independent comparison tyre tests are the best source of data to get tyre information from, and the good news is there have been eleven tests which compare both tyres directly!

Summary of eleven total tests comparing both tyres directly

While it might look like the Michelin X Ice North 4 is better than the Continental IceContact 3 purely based on the higher number of test wins, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Class-leading wet braking and handling across tests (e.g., 6-7% shorter wet stops vs Michelin in multiple years)
  • More precise steering and predictable behavior on asphalt and mixed conditions
  • Often quieter and with lower rolling resistance/fuel use in several tests
  • Competitive snow performance with stable, easy control
  • Outstanding ice braking, traction and handling (frequent double-digit advantages)
  • Calm, stable understeer balance with secure rear on winter surfaces
  • Good snow grip and short dry stops in several tests
  • Generally comfortable for a heavily studded tyre

Dry Braking

Looking at data from eight tyre tests, the Continental IceContact 3 was better during four dry braking tests. On average the Continental IceContact 3 stopped the vehicle in 0.92% less distance than the Michelin X Ice North 4.

Best Review for the Continental IceContact 3
Given 80% 215/55 R16 T on a combination of roads for 8,500 average miles
I had regular studs Superb grip on packed snow and ~1 cm of snow on top of the packed snow. Grip on ice is great also tested on lake ice track. One can have fun throwing the car around on ice and tyres feel good especially while braking. I felt confident with them on slippery surfaces. When there is around 4-5 cm of snow these tyres are too wide and lose contact with hard surface on higher speeds. For those days I wish i had narrower tyres but it is not "the tyres fault". Dry and Wer grip is pretty good but unstudded tyres could be better for those conditions. Atleast these tyres are... Continue reading this review using the link below

Best Review for the Michelin X Ice North 4
Given 91% 205/55 R16 T on a combination of roads for 0 spirited miles
Uncompromising grip on all types of winter surfaces. Out of competition on the ice tracks. Very low noise level, audible only at low speeds when driving on a clean road. With these tires, it is very difficult to achieve ABS actuation. Perfectly copes with leaving the track. After running-in in compliance with the manufacturer's recommendations, the studs took their position and after 15,000 km remain in place. I recommend to buy, the best studded tire.

Conclusion

If your winters mean frequent polished ice and you prioritize the shortest stops and strongest drive-off on slick surfaces, the Michelin X-Ice North 4 is the safer bet. It dominates ice metrics in most tests (often by double-digit margins) and delivers calm, understeer-biased behavior that keeps the rear planted, even if steering precision is not its forte and wet/asphalt performance lags.

For mixed Nordic use with lots of cleared roads, rain, and slush, the Continental IceContact 3 is the more rounded daily tyre. It repeatedly wins wet braking and handling, is easier to place with more precise steering, rides more quietly in several tests, and often returns better fuel economy/rolling resistance. You give up some ultimate ice bite versus Michelin, but gain confidence, predictability, and shorter wet stops when conditions swing above freezing.

Bottom line: choose Michelin for maximum ice security; choose Continental for balanced, real-world usability when winter brings both ice and long stretches of bare or wet tarmac.
Key Differences
  • Ice performance: Michelin clearly ahead in braking/traction/handling; Continental occasionally trails by large margins on ice.
  • Wet performance: Continental consistently shorter wet braking and faster wet handling laps.
  • Steering feel: Continental more precise and predictable; Michelin can feel slower and less accurate when turning.
  • Asphalt manners: Continental better stability, lower noise in several tests, and more confidence in evasive maneuvers.
  • Efficiency: Mixed, but many results favor Continental on rolling resistance/fuel; Michelin sometimes penalized for higher RR.
  • Aquaplaning: Continental usually stronger in straight aquaplaning; Michelin shows weaker resistance in several tests.

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
