215/40 17 Tyre Review Highlights

Nexen N Fera Primus rated 83% while driving a Volkswagen Polo BlueGT 6R
Driving on mostly country roads for 15000 spirited miles
The best tire I've had so far. The grip on any surface is fantastic. Czech Republic production, very much a plus for this company. One thing I can only complain about is the very low tread, and from what I've noticed they wear down quite quickly. The price is also fantastic for such a quality tire.

Terrible tires, horribly noisy and zero grip on wet, on dry conditions my car always understeer.

Continental Premium Contact 6 rated 74% while driving a Volkswagen polo gti 1.8t
Driving on mostly motorways for 20000 spirited miles
A very nice and progressive tyre for a hot hatch. With regular motorway miles and a fair bit of spirited driving in the countryside, they seem to hold up well with only needing to change 2 tyres (as I rotate front to rear) once a year after around 20-22,000 miles. Sometimes there is little feel from the tyres on some sections of country road but this varies on the quality of the tarmac.
Have tried various other tyres for my hot hatch (PS4, Avon ZRs) and nothing really suits the car as well as the PC6s on 17" rims.

I bought these tires from a so called reputable tire dealer, ( Tiger Wheel and Tire) I originally bought Wanley tires from them and were very disappointed so I immediately returned them and was offered the 215/40/17 GT Radial Sportactive tires. They weren't very good or better than the Wanley but I decided to keep them as my budget was limited. But 2 years later with very low mileage one tire blowout for no reason. Inner side wall failure. Another year later another tire blowout exactly the same story. On both occasions all my other tires were fully inflated and tire pressures were checked regularly. Another year later the last two remaining tires I purchased had wall cracks on the inside walls. Clearly another two blowouts waiting to happen on the remaining two tires and also on the remaining Inner walls side and both tires had cracks at exactly the same locations at the tires stamped section. Tire suppliers Tiger Wheel and Tire N1 City and there Supplier are claiming that my tires were under inflated and I drove the car with heavy loads. So not honoring there services. Tire pressure is at 220 kpa on this tires. So basically I will not use there services or dealerships again. I will definitely not buy Wanley or GT Radial sportactive tires ever again as they lack integrity on the whole. Not fit for the road and just cheap cosmetic trash tires.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 rated 77% while driving a Mazda Unknown
Driving on mostly country roads for 6000 spirited miles
Comparison Points:
Bridgestone Potenza Sport (OEM)
Falken Azenis FK510

The PS4 is a great allrounder. Having the best handling and grip in the wet from all my previous tires, it is a safe choice. The road feedback and dry handling was better on both my previously installed wheel types. The PS4 is comfortable from a damping perspective, but the tire noise is slightly higher than on both my previously used tire models. The PS4 is the best-wearing tire from the bunch - you can easily get two seasons, if not three out of one set. The downsides on the PS4 are most likely because of a slightly softer tire wall than the previously used tires. Although the PS4 is most likely the best allrounder tire, I'd prefer to get more dry road grip and better feedback from my next tires.

Accelera 651 Sport rated 51% while driving a Fiat 500 Abarth
Driving on a combination of roads for 4000 spirited miles
The Accelera 651 Sport is marketed as an All-Around multipurpose semi-slick; capable of enduring the demands of performance driving while also providing good road manners. I did not find this to be the case.

This review comes after having had two sets of these tyres(2k miles each) in their 200 Treadwear compound fitted to my 290hp big turbo Abarth 500; each time only enduring one trackday before being rendered useless. Tyre temperatures were monitored and pressures were set to 30PSI hot, front and rear for trackdays. 30PSI cold for road use.

Dry grip was comparable to a budget road tyre, non-existent and inconsistent. On track they displayed a significant oversteer bias with inconsistent front axle grip and really rather soft sidewalls for a semi-slick. The surface of the tyres wore quite heavily on the inside edge, suggesting they are not suited to aggressive front end alignments in "grip" use, front axle camber was set to -3.5 degrees, backed off to -1.7 after multiple laps. Rear axle camber was -0.5, rear tyres wore reasonably evenly.

In the wet these tyres offer about 70% of the grip they have in the dry, suggesting the tread pattern is really rather good at evacuating water and the compound is not too terribly temperature sensitive.

Speaking of temperature, these tyres withstood multiple heat cycles with no real drop in performance over their lifespan, so(as suggested by the website) would probably make very good rear axle tyres for high power drift cars. Minimal feathering was observed by the end of each trackday.

On the road, these were extremely noisy(even more so than any other track tyre I've ever used), wore at an accelerated rate, were very squirrely in the wet at 50% and below tread depth and despite having soft sidewalls for track use were extremely stiff on the road.

I would recommend the 651 Sport if you are needing an *extremely* affordable semi-slick on the rear axle of a front wheel drive track car or are trying to encourage oversteer in a FWD track car. Otherwise, you would be better served by the Nankang NS2R 180TW tyre in similar sizing which has longer life, better grip, better feedback, is less sensitive to aggressive geometry and has similar heat management.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 rated 89% while driving a Ford Fiesta ST180
Driving on a combination of roads for 15000 spirited miles
I really enjoyed these tyres. They have excellent grip in the dry and good in wet as well. Are a bit noisy but not too bad. Had them on for 20000+ kilometers including around 10 track days. The fronts were just changeg to Asymmetric 6s, the rears still have plenty of meat on them.

Bridgestone Potenza Sport rated 81% while driving a SEAT Ibiza Cupra 20VT
Driving on mostly country roads for 15000 spirited miles
This is an end of life review.

The Bridgestone Potenza Sport is an excellent sporty tire. It has good grip in the dry and resists the hot 35C summers here in Greece well. They are neutral at the limit, allowing me to control the rotation of the car with the accelerator if needed. Steering feedback is above average (though my Ibiza with its electrohydraulic rack is not the most communicative platform. Braking distance is excellent both on dry and wet surfaces. Wet grip is decent for the low tread the tires come from the factory, and handling balance there has a tiny hint of oversteer, but its so little that even the ESP doesn't activate.

Comfort and noise take a step back, but I don't really care about such trivial things. Tire life is also shorter compared to the PS4, but the upsides make up for it. Lastly, the price is very reasonable at around 420€/set. I'll fit them again next month when it's time to change tires.

Goodyear UltraGrip Performance Plus rated 99% while driving a SEAT 1.4 TSI
Driving on mostly motorways for 2000 easy going miles
I drove 2000 kilometers in my Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+ 215/40R17 87V XL FP Mini Sport Coupe Ibiza CUPRA in the last 15 days. My first impressions are that the tires showed excellent performance and grip on wet, dry and snowy roads. I got the performance I expected without any worries, the tires are great, I recommend it to everyone.

Continental Premium Contact 6 rated 87% while driving a Volkswagen Polo 1.0TSI
Driving on mostly motorways for 6676 spirited miles
These tyres came OE with my 2022 VW Polo and I have really mixed opinions about them Let's start off with the good They handle....amazing in dry conditions. Road feedback is superb and they do exactly what they need to. Too early for a wear review, but handling wise they handle amazing. Braking is top notch, wet handling is also actually pretty damn good. And the tyres are actually quite comfy too Now the bad The road noise is some of the worst I've ever experienced in a tyre. It's so bad that, even though they have only just over 6 000km on the set, I'm honestly considering changing them. That may not bother some people but it gets to me, especially that I do mostly highway and long trips It isn't necessarily a deal breaker, as the handling and feedback from the tyre is great. But just something to definitely consider when buying the tyre

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 rated 74% while driving a SEAT Ibiza Cupra 1.4 TSI
Driving on a combination of roads for 25000 easy going miles
I use 215/40/17 87Y Michelin PS4s in my 2013 Ibiza CUPRA vehicle in the summer season, high performance summer tire for the summer heat on the Mediterranean coastline in the South of Turkey, it provides very safe handling even at high speeds on dry or heavy rainy roads, very safe after the tires are warmed up. it grips well, grips the road well, very fast and superior grip steering response on mountainous and tight curvy roads between cities, super slip on the panic brake on the dry city road when cold, ABS is activated very often, but I think the reason is because it is a low profile sporty tire with 40 sidewalls, about 25,000 since 2017 as a summer set of them. I use mileage, I have a separate set of tires for winter. I think that MICHELIN does not produce summer tires as long-lasting as winter tires, unfortunately PS4s were subject to rapid deformation despite low mileage and became old. I will replace them with ASYM 6s in the summer of 2023.
