205/50 17 Tyre Review Highlights

Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 rated 86% while driving a Mazda Mazda 3, 2.3
Driving on a combination of roads for 10000 average miles
These tires have proven to be one of the best things I ever put on my car. I've had this Mazda 3 for many years and have kept its mechanical condition as close to perfect as possible, but the tire type has changed routinely depending on where I live and how I was doing financially - from cheap tires, to standard touring tires, studless snow tires, and these Pilot All Season tires. They are not the most comfortable tires nor the quietest, I'll say that - you'll get better and FAR quieter ride quality out of many other types of tire, but they also aren't inherently uncomfortable. The biggest annoyance factor you may take into consideration is the large amount of road noise.

The handling with these tires, however, is something I can only describe as magical - this may seem quite specific, but the initial turn-in when going around a curve, especially at speed, is considerably more responsive and provides you greater confidence than any other tire I've personally experienced. This also includes Pirelli's direct competitor, the P-Zero All Season. You feel absolutely everything in the road and have no trouble whatsoever determining your car's limits in more aggressive driving. Even in wet driving, that confidence largely remains intact - something I very much did not expect in a performance all season tire despite the 'all season' moniker.

Temperature plays a huge role however - when the outside air gets colder, the tires do not grip as well. Winter time here never fully reaches below freezing temperatures, but even so the tires would begin to noticeably feel less capable in low temps. These tires love heat and if your journeys are typically shorter, slower, or in colder climates, you may not be able to heat the tires properly to experience them as they should be felt. It can even reach the point of danger as I found out, as a project car I'm working on has some cheap budget tires on it and can come to a stop very quickly even in cold temperatures as the cheap all seasons on it do not require as much heat to effectively grip - meanwhile, the Pilots almost sent me into a car that decided to suddenly cross multiple lanes of traffic at slow speeds on a 50mph road when they could not grip during cold, dry weather braking.

The tires have also noticeably worn after around 10,000 miles. This hasn't affected their driving feel, but their specifications listing around a 40k+ mile tread life are flat out not true. I expect these to wear out and need replacement within another 10,000 miles or so, and the Pilots are quite pricey compared even to other similar tire types from competing brands. These tires should be seen as a treat for you as a driver and for your car - something that you will greatly enjoy, but not something you should expect to last a long time or be kind to your wallet.

had 2 pairs on my car one with 2020 DOT one with 2022 DOT both pairs are now in Feb 2025 all cracked up on the car and need to change all 4 of them... not very happy with how they lasted... on the car they feel ok, good grip in dry and also in wet (in uk mostly rainy days) never had problems not braking in time (had a few emergency braking, and they done a great job)

Vredestein Wintrac Pro rated 96% while driving a Renault Megane IV estate
Driving on mostly motorways for 30000 average miles
I mostly use the car for long jouneys, so I was looking for a winter tyre that provides safety not only on snow and ice, but also on dry and damp roads. Snow became a rare appearance in the last years, so dry and wet performance is really important in winter tyres. I have to say the reviews I read here helped my decision, and also I found the Vredestein tyres at a really good price. They have an amazing amount of grip on snowy and icy roads, they really inspire confidence. On the dry they feel better compared to my factory fitted Continental Eco Contact 6 summer tyres. Maybe on wet roads things could be better, but still it's a safe tyre. Wear seems to be extremely good, this is my 3rd winter, approximately 30.000 kms and they still have a lot of tread. So very good value for money, I definitely reccomend the Wintrac Pro.

Continental EcoContact 6 rated 44% while driving a Renault Megane IV estate
Driving on mostly motorways for 18000 average miles
These tyres were fitted from factory on my Megane. They do not excel in any category, the steering feels numb, dry grip is let's say average, wet grip is weak, noise level not great either. Honestly, my winter tyres, Vredestein Wintrac Pro feel safer in the dry and wet compared to the Conti Eco Contact 6. Despite the low amount of grip, wear is high, after 3 seasons they need replacing. I really can't find any strong points for these tyres. Maybe rolling resistance, allthough I don't see differences in fuel consumption compared to the winter tyres. Would not recommand these tyres. They are priced as premium tyres, but they really feel more like budget tyres to me. Maybe they would do ok on a small car that only drives around town.

Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF3 rated 96% while driving a Renault Megane
Driving on a combination of roads for 20000 spirited miles
Before these tyres I drove Kumho Solus all season tyres and was disappointed with them. They lasted 40 000 km, but grip was average on dry, bad on wet and when I tried them in snow I only managed to drive half way up a snowy road close to my house where I live.

After a lot of thinking and calculating once again I decided to buy all season tyres since buying two sets of premium winter and summer tyres is nowadays rather expensive (especially if you drive 35 000 km per year as I do). But this time I watched probably every possible review of every tyre ever made.

And that's how I ended up buying these Pirelli tyres. And they are amazing. I've driven them for about 2000 km. On dry roads almost every tyre will be ok, the question was how are they going to behave on wet roads and in the snow? I really pushed them to the limit in these conditions and they performed great. Grip in wet is amazing, tyres are giving me a lot of confidence. This year I went to the exact snowy hill to compare them with before mentioned Kumho tyres and they performed great, climbing up a snowy and muddy road without a problem.

They will probably not last as long as Kumho but we'll see.

All in all, I would definitely recommend these tyres.

Bridgestone Turanza 6 rated 92% while driving a Volvo V40, 2013 D2
Driving on mostly motorways for 2000 average miles
Replaced good old trusty Pirelli P7s for these after having really great experience with Bridgestone’s Blizzak 05.
I’ve read all the test I could find comparing Turanza 6 with Pirelli Cinturato P7 and they’ve seemed on par in wet which is the most important for me (yeah, Volvo owner…). The main difference in reviews was in handling feel.
And I must say, the reviews were accurate or I just impressed the results so deep in my head that I have to agree with them. Turanza 6 is amazingly comfortable (really soft sidewall compared with tires with same weight index), quiet and just overall calm tire. If you like to chill, go legal speeds and simply be reasonable, it’s perfect and I could not be happier.
The negative comes if you like to feel something or enjoy a bit of fun on b roads. It takes just a bit of extra time to settle in turn. The weight transfer of the car feels a bit more pronounced than with the Pirelli P7. It’s not dealbreaker, it’s just a quirk that’s good to know about. It never feels like more understeer or not following your commands. It just takes it’s (very short but noticeable) time to proceed.
So comparing first summer on Turanza 6 to couple of years on Pirelli Cinturato P7 is basically realizing that I kind of like all the comfort and quietness over the “sportier” more direct but also harsher Pirelli. Yeah, Volvo owner…

At first amazing best tire i ever had.

Now very loud and feel like i am not in total control. Front tires raised and should be replaced. 5.7mm tread is left after 21000 km all on highway to berlin, sweden, and hamburg!

Set of 310s amazed at how much better than the Goodyears they replaced. Quite, comfortable and good road feel. Have no idea the wet hasn’t rained in two months here! We will see but most impressed at the moment!

Kumho Solus 4S HA32 rated 92% while driving a Mazda Unknown
Driving on a combination of roads for 40000 average miles
Fantastic tires. Running these on my Mazda 3. Very impressed with the traction. Ride quality is better than I expected based on tread design. I'm currently at approx 40,000km on the tires and they are still sitting at 80% tread remaining based on the measurements at my last tire rotation. Would buy again - recommend as a more affordable all-weather option to anyone that asks.

Corners well and wet handling is nice but horrible wear during under sun. As a finnish tyre it wore rapidly at summer during pandemic. First spiderweb appearence at all sides. Then sidewalls began to separate and wires become visible...
